In Venice, magic is not unusual. Merle is apprenticed to a magic mirror maker, and Serafin—a boy who was once a master thief—works for a weaver of magic cloth. Merle and Serafin are used to the mermaids who live in the canals of the city and to the guards who patrol the streets on living stone lions. Merle herself possesses something magical a mirror whose surface is water. She can reach her whole arm into it and never get wet.

But Venice is under siege by the Egyptian Empire; its terrifying mummy warriors are waiting to strike. All that protects the Venetians is the Flowing Queen. Nobody knows who or what she is—only that her power flows through the canals and keeps the Egyptians at bay.

When Merle and Serafin overhear a plot to capture the Flowing Queen, they are catapulted into desperate danger. They must do everything they can to rescue the Queen and save the city—even if it means getting help from the Ancient Traitor himself.

The Water Mirror The Dark Reflections Trilogy Book 1 eBook Kai Meyer Elizabeth D Crawford

This was an intriguing fantasy and I loved the world that the author created. It is an alternative world where Venice has been held in a siege by Egypt. Venice is guarded by stone lions that patrol the city and the canals are filled with mermaids with alluring eyes but with mouths like sharks. Two orphan girls are apprenticed to a mirror maker who deals with magical mirrors and phantoms trapped within the mirrors. Merle, one of the orphans has her own magic mirror with surface like water, left to her by her parents that has a comforting hand within. The other girl, Junipa, is blind, but is given sight again by the mirror maker, by small mirrors in her eyes. The plot becomes more urgent as the girls meet the protector of Venice, the Flowing Queen, who needs their help, some young thieves, and an imprisoned stone lion with wings. I have always been a fan of Venice and I enjoyed the fantastical elements. The descriptions gave me vivid visuals and the plot moved well. I look forward to reading the next one in the series. The story leaves you in anticipation of the sequel.

The Water Mirror The Dark Reflections Trilogy Book 1 eBook Kai Meyer Elizabeth D Crawford Reviews

Kai Meyer is one of those author's whose creativity is above and beyond talented. Within the market-flooded fantasy book world, there are so many books published with the same old sword and scorcery, dragons, and intergallactical space wars. Kai Meyer has managed to invent unique methods of using magic and fantasy like you've never seen before. I have already read his later trilogy, The Wave Walkers and found that his ideas were very fresh and innovative. Now reading this first book in the Dark Reflections Trilogy, I was still amazed at his ingenuity and was not disappointed.

This is a story of two orphan girls, Junipa and Merle, who were both abandoned by their parents and left at an orphanage. For predestined reasons we the readers don't know yet, they are chosen to be apprentices to the magic mirror maker, Arcimboldo.

This story takes place in the late 1800s in an alternative fantasy world of Venice where gondolas glide over canals of wonder and of hidden secrets below the water's surface. The reader enjoys meeting spectacular creatures like mermaids with mouths of shark-like teeth, giant stone talking lions made of obsidion and granite that fly, and water phantoms that are trapped in magical mirrors.

Book one of this trilogy, Water Mirror, starts out very engaging and interesting. The reader soon gets very involved with the two girls who are very quickly led into a secret world of intrique, adventure, of love and of war.The story is very fast paced, written for the level of middle reader or early young adults, and is a quick read. This can not be read as a stand alone due to the cliff-hanger ending leaving us eagerly waiting for the second book in the series. I thoroughly enjoyed Water Mirror for two reasons. One I love alternative fantasy worlds based on real places we know of and I am a big fan of high levels of writing creativity. If you are a fantasy fan who craves something fresh and new, try any of Kai Meyer's books within his two trilogies. You wont be disappointed. Two thumbs up for this story and I'm ready to dive into book two!
Ahoy there me mateys! This was an young adult fantasy audiobook that I picked up because it takes place in a magical Venice, the author is German, and it has a wonderful cover

I loved the setting of the book. The story takes place in an alternate magical Venice. The world is ruled by the Egyptian Pharaoh who controls mummies and flying ships. The exception is Venice, a city whose waters are protected by the Flowing Queen. Mermaids and living stone lions are only some of the creatures that call the city home. This book tells the tale two children who apprentice with rival masters and stumble across a plot to destroy the Queen and allow the city to be overthrown. One is Merle, who apprentices with a mirror maker. The other is Serafin, an ex-thief apprenticed to a cloth maker.

The concepts of this story were very fun. I loved the murderous mermaids in the canals. I loved the living, breathing stone lions that guard the city. I thought the mirror magic was interesting and loved how it was used to make a blind girl see. I thought both Merle and Serafin were interesting characters. So what was the problem? The plot.

This story was all over the place. While the world building was interesting, the author didn’t really use it to good effect. It started out with an awesome friendship between two dissimilar girl orphans who end up with the same apprenticeship with a mirror magician. I thought it was going to be about the two friends on adventures with the mirrors as the plot points. But the author quickly dumps the second girl from the story and instead adds in a boy and hints of a young crush. Then ye get odd historical info-dumping, plot points that make no sense, meanderings to no purpose, and a Queen that was not only bizarre but annoying.

I ended up mostly being confused and unhappy with the outcome of it all. The book overall seemed to be just a set-up to a bigger story and nothing truly interesting happens with any of the fantastical elements. The ending was abrupt and seems to be heading towards a cliche, boring and silly conflict. I will not be reading and more of this series or any of the author’s other works.

For me this one walks the plank! Arrrr!
I was excitied to read this book, it was something different. There are lots of unanswered questions in this book. A good storyline that makes you want to see it to the end. However, I was a bit bored with the book. This is probably just me as mermaids don't interest me. The ending is a cliffhanger, as mentioned by others, but it wasn't enough for me to want to read the 2nd book. The Water Mirror didn't leave a real impression on me. I found the Flowing Queen annoying. She never seemed to be of any help to Merle. I expected more from Eft. It felt as she was being played up to be a major character and then just stopped. Also making a deal with Satan to save the city? Just not my thing. Overall, if you like mystery and cliffhangers, this is the book for you. It wasn't for me.
